What startups can and should do to protect their mobile application idea. Experienced mobile app lawyer Andrew S. Bosin can help protect your intellectual property rights for the mobile phone app that you developed.
First things first. Do not allow any developer to begin working on developing your app unless you have a contract in writing which says that whatever the developer creates or builds for you that you own all of the intellectual property (IP) rights.
Here are some other suggestions for trying to protect your mobile app intellectual property rights:
Register your original work, i.e., written code with the US Copyright office because you cannot sue for copyright infringement unless your work is registered.
If you are using any source code that you have licensed from another person or entity to create your app— including open source code— this work cannot be copyrighted by you, and the license agreement must be honored.
To protect the name of your app, you should register the app name with the US Patent and Trademark Office.
